Parler's Platform

Image
The popular social media platform for conservatives has gained new owners that are looking to make the site as mainstream as possible, making it a "Twitter clone." That leaves the question, which form of Twitter are they talking about? Since Elon Musk's takeover of the Twitter platform, things have been quite different from saying the least, as the idea of "free speech" and "un-censorship" has been questionable, to say the least. When you have someone like Musk that follows and replies under the tweets of gimmick accounts that promote racial confrontation, mainly with Black people at the center of it, while following hardcore race warriors' accounts, it's impossible to turn a blind eye, especially if you've been on the app before Elon's acquisition.  So, what route will this Parler go, and will the conservative side of things allow for it to continue spreading false information that is harmful to society at an alarming rate without rep...

The New York Post: The Right Wing Propaganda Machine

Image
The New York Post, a popular daily newspaper in the United States, is known for its conservative political views and its coverage of news with a hardnosed right-leaning bias. This bias can and has been damaging to Black people in several ways. First, the New York Post's political bias can result in the publication of stories that reinforce negative stereotypes about Black people. For example, the picture above showcases two different instances with similar outcomes. 17-year-old Trayvon Martin was murdered, but the New York Post thought his having "weed in his system" was an important part of the story, while 25-year-old Connor Sturgeon, who killed 5 individuals before being rightfully gunned down by police has had the blanket of "CTE' and "Mental Illness" covering for him. This type of coverage can fuel racist attitudes and discrimination against Black people. Overall, the New York Post's political bias can contribute to a culture of racism and di...

Classy Double Standard

Image
This year's Women's Basketball National Championship highlighted a racist double standard that had the ability to nearly eclipse the game itself. On April 2, Louisiana State University defeated the University of Iowa and won their first NCAA women's college basketball national championship - one accomplishment that should have been one of the biggest stories for women's sports of the year. But what happened in the final seconds is what took front and center. LSU star forward Angel Reese pointed at her ring finger and then did John Cena's 'You Can't See Me,' an iconic hand gesture towards Iowa star Caitlin Clark, as she is the team's best player.  Those actions by Reese led to many conversations about women's sports and hypocrisy on the scale of gender and race. As where in the Men's game, taunting and trash-talking are a way of life, and some might even say you can't have basketball without it, but in this case, the race of each player ...

Faux Black Criminality

Image
Using fake crime stats against Black Americans is a longstanding issue perpetuating systemic racism and injustice. These false statistics are often used to support discriminatory policies and practices, such as racial profiling and harsher sentencing for Black individuals. It is important to combat the use of fake crime stats by promoting accurate and reliable data that takes into account the complex social and economic factors that contribute to crime rates. Furthermore, the use of fake crime stats against Black Americans is often closely related to politics. Politicians may use these false statistics to push their own agendas and appeal to their base, often at the expense of marginalized communities. This is particularly concerning in the context of law enforcement and criminal justice policies, where the use of fake crime stats can lead to biased policing practices and wrongful convictions. To combat the use of fake crime stats against Black Americans, it is important to hold p...

The Black Video Game Character

Image
The depiction of Black video game characters versus white characters has been a contentious issue in the gaming industry. Historically, Black characters have been underrepresented and stereotypically portrayed, while white characters have been overrepresented and portrayed as the default or norm. This can be seen as reflective of broader political and societal power structures that privilege whiteness and marginalize Blackness. However, there have been efforts in recent years to create more diverse and nuanced representations of Black characters in video games and address the historical lack of representation. For example, games like "Watch Dogs 2" and "Life is Strange 2" feature Black protagonists with complex personalities and storylines. At the same time, there has been a backlash to these efforts, with some gamers pushing back against what they see as "forced diversity" or "political correctness." This resistance to representation can refle...

Exoneration in America

Image
The recent Sidney Holmes case from March 15th highlights the systemic racial bias that exists within the American criminal justice system. Holmes, a Black man, was wrongfully convicted of a murder he did not commit in 1989 and spent over 19 years in prison before he was finally exonerated in 2009. The case illustrates how Black individuals are disproportionately impacted by wrongful convictions and over-representation in the criminal justice system. Studies have shown that Black people in America are more likely to be wrongfully convicted than any other racial or ethnic group. A National Registry of Exonerations report found that Black people make up only 13% of the US population, yet they represent 47% of the exonerations due to wrongful convictions. This disparity is largely due to systemic racism and bias, including racial profiling, implicit bias, and unequal access to legal resources. Moreover, this racial bias is reflected in the exoneration rates of Black people in America...

Racial Bias and the Black Quarterback

Image
Lamar Jackson, the NFL's Baltimore Ravens star, has been one of the league's best players for the last five years. In Jackson's MVP season, he set the season record for quarterback rushing yards while simultaneously leading the league in touchdown passes, bringing the Ravens to the top seed in the AFC. Although he became just the second unanimous MVP in NFL History that season, you wouldn't believe any of that if his ongoing contract "war" with Baltimore was your first time hearing of him. The racial stigma in sports when it comes to black athletes has been a long-winded discussion full of so many layers, with the politics of everything being at the forefront. Lamar Jackson, who from 2018-2022 was still on his rookie contract, earning $9M a year, was looking for a necessary boost in salary once that contract was over. Still, after seeing the field and how quarterbacks who have done far less than him have earned massive paydays, he wants to be the second-high...
