Parler's Platform
The popular social media platform for conservatives has gained new owners that are looking to make the site as mainstream as possible, making it a "Twitter clone." That leaves the question, which form of Twitter are they talking about? Since Elon Musk's takeover of the Twitter platform, things have been quite different from saying the least, as the idea of "free speech" and "un-censorship" has been questionable, to say the least. When you have someone like Musk that follows and replies under the tweets of gimmick accounts that promote racial confrontation, mainly with Black people at the center of it, while following hardcore race warriors' accounts, it's impossible to turn a blind eye, especially if you've been on the app before Elon's acquisition.
So, what route will this Parler go, and will the conservative side of things allow for it to continue spreading false information that is harmful to society at an alarming rate without repercussion?

Well I believe that Parker will model itself after twitter but it will mostly be leaning towards conservative side. Twitter in my opinion has always been about free speech and even after Elon Musk acquired twitter I believe that it is still free speech. I understand there are some cases where Elon himself goes under some posts and make "controversial" statements but that cannot be said for majority of posts that go on twitter. Now back to Parler I actually joined the app early in it development phase and I will have to say it is for conservatives. The very first post in 2020 was about Trump and speaking on how conservative ideas should be supported. I feel that if you treat Parler like how you would treat twitter you'd be met with unpleasant replies, so then you'd be invoking that same confrontations that you say Elon musk promote.
ReplyDeleteMany see Twitter as a mostly left-leaning social media site, with a majority of users forming opinions and agreeing with those on the Democratic side. Parler in my eyes will just end up being a place where a majority will be conservative, but the general idea will be the same. People will be able to talk more about right-leaning subjects without feeling like they are being suppressed, even though most issues that twitter is seeing from most "conservatives" is just blatant racism, and not things that actually follow conservative values.
ReplyDeleteI think an interesting observation about polarized social media sites like Truth Social and Parler are that they lack the fact checking mechanisms of other social media sites. Where on Instagram and Twitter, a warning will pop up under a tweet that is misleading, misinformed, or missing context. I am left leaning but I do support all being able to voice non bigoted opinions, why is it that all the right winged media sites lack the capability to track misinformation? I think they would lose too much of their base if they stopped feeding sensationalized lies.
ReplyDeleteI had never heard of the social media platform Parler until I did some research, which then led to me understanding that they had banned it for being a source of false information and containing Trump-backed conspiracy theories. It is astonishing to think that people have become so obsessed with confrontation that they are willing to create platforms that create divisiveness, which is not an honorable or respectful way to exist together on one planet.
